It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Elizabeth Ann (Liz, Bunny) Cummings, on March 24, 2018 at Manchester Manor, Manchester, Connecticut
Elizabeth was born on August 2, 1940 in Portland, Maine, to the late Eugene and Mary Ellen Cummings, was educated in the Portland School System, and worked for the John J. Nissen’s Bakery in Portland. In1969 Liz transferred to the First National Bakery, in East Hartford, and moved her family to Connecticut.
In the late 1970’s Liz started her career working for the State of Connecticut, Department of Purchasing in Middletown, and later transferred to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Wethersfield, retiring in 1997. She was an pianist, a teacher who loved to tickle the ivories, she taught piano in the Town of Bloomfield. She loved music, and loved to dance.
Bunny’s home cooking specialties included hams seasoned to a tee, her signature Baked Beans, made with Navy Beans, Pork, and Molasses in her favorite bean pot, and Pineapple Upside Down Cake.
She traveled to Hawaii on occasions, with Miss Robin one of her longtime friends. She traveled with her children home to Maine as often as she could making sure her children knew their roots. A proud Mainer, she loved Old Orchard Beach, Pine Point, Italian Sandwiches, and Whole Belly Claims
In the African Proverb: Children Are the Reward of Life. Elizabeth leaves her rewards: 10 Children: Ruby, Sharon (Saul), Cheryl, Sandra (Anthony), Edward (Wanda), Cynthia (Robert), Barbara, Michael, Richard, and Christine, 33 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, 3 brothers: Frederick (Jean), Thomas and Leonard (Mary Jane) 1 sister Anita(Gerald) and her long-time friends Mrs. Carolyn Champion from Connecticut, and Mrs. Nan Stovall from Maine. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
She is predeceased by her daughter, Patricia, grand-daughter Iman, great grandson Gabriel, great granddaughter Ariyah, and 2 brothers Bertram and Richard.
Visiting hours are Saturday April 7, 2018, from 10AM-12NOON at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford, CT 06108, followed immediately at 12NOON by a Life Well Celebrated Service.
Elizabeth will be laid to rest in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland Maine, on April 9, 2018, with her late mother, and grandfather, John Reginald Spaulding, an African servant who traveled from Sene-Gambia to America, on July 16, 1890.
