Albert “Al” Lee Floyd, 72, of East Windsor, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. Al was born on June 25, 1949, the second of five children, to Arrie Pearl (Askew) Floyd and the late John Lee Floyd, in Hartford.
He grew up in Charter Oak Terrace in Hartford, attended Mary Hooker School, Moylan School, Warburton Community Church and enjoyed many activities at the local Boys & Girls Club.
He was one of the first students to attend, what was then, the new Hartford Public High School his freshman year. It was there that he met the love of his life Sharon Ann (Bingham), who would later become his wife. Al was awarded a scholarship, enabling him to continue his high school education at Westminster School located in Simsbury. He was an active participant in all aspects of campus life, especially sports. He was a talented athlete and excelled in basketball, but also enjoyed playing lacrosse and football. He especially enjoyed his years at Westminster and made a host of lifelong friends before graduating in 1968. He always looked forward to returning to “The Hill” to attend class reunions.
Al was awarded a scholarship to and attended Trinity College in Hartford, where he was later named captain of the basketball team. While attending Trinity College he pursued and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in 1972.
Upon graduating from Trinity College, Al began his professional career in the aerospace industry at Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, a division of United Technologies Corporation (UTC), where he worked for the next 27 years.
He would marry Sharon at the Chapel on campus at Trinity College in 1973. During the earlier years of their marriage, they resided in East Hartford, where their son Gregory was born. During this time Al pursued his Master’s degree in Business Administration at Western New England College in Springfield, MA. He also acquired his referee license and refereed basketball games and also played on the basketball league at UTC. They later purchased a home and relocated to East Windsor as they started to expand their family, and it was in East Windsor that they had their son Ronald and daughter Kimberly.
Al would continue his career at Pratt & Whitney, also a division of UTC, located in East Hartford, where he subsequently worked for seven years before retiring.
Al had a big heart and was a caring person. He dedicated his life to service, especially mentoring the youth and served as former Chairman for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Foundation, President of the Scout Hall Youth Center Building Committee, Board of Trustees and former Chairman for the Warehouse Point Library, member of the American Heritage River Commission, former Assistant Scoutmaster Troop #17, former coach for boys and girls youth sports (Little League, soccer, and basketball) in East Windsor and was actually one of the league founders for the Basketball Program. As recognition for his contributions to the community, he received the Hartford Courant Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1996, East Windsor Rotary Club Citizen of the Year in 1999, and was elected to the East Windsor Board of Finance in 1999.
Al was a proud, loving and hands-on father and grandfather. He enjoyed golfing, was an avid fisherman and cherished spending quality time with his family. Some of Al’s favorite pastimes included, sunbathing by his pool, trips to the beach, freshwater and saltwater fishing with family members and friends, taking annual camping trips, going to sporting events with his sons, participating in a weekly golf league every season with his UTC colleagues, participating in the annual East Windsor Rotary Club Golf Tournaments, backyard barbeques and holiday get-togethers with family, and leisurely golfing with his sons, son-in-law and friends. In his spare time, Al loved to travel with his wife which more recently included the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and California and really cherished his trips to Buffalo, NY and Talladega, AL to visit family. He also enjoyed attending the annual Jazz Festival at Bushnell Park in Hartford with his family. His famous sweet potato pies will be missed by many.
Al was a loyal husband, father, brother and friend. Those who knew him best know he had a kind soul and gentle heart. He was also a prankster and his big personality and great sense of humor will be missed dearly.
He leaves to mourn his passing a loving and devoted wife, Sharon A. Floyd, three loving and devoted children Gregory L. Floyd and his wife Amy of Irvington, NY, Ronald K. Floyd of Glastonbury and Kimberly D. Floyd and her husband Carlos Ruiz of West Hartford, adoring grandchildren, Natalie, Sienna, Lincoln, Madison, Adriana, Giavanna and Kairo, a cherished mother, Arrie P. Floyd of East Windsor, brother, Louis E. Floyd of Hartford, many caring in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is predeceased by his father, John Lee Floyd, sister, Annie Jo Floyd, brothers, James F. Floyd and Howard L. Floyd.
A private celebration of his life will take place at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 7th.
A public memorial service will take place at a later date in the Summer of 2022.
