Mrs. Doris Gregory Messer of 600 McKay in Erwin departed this life on August 24, 2018 at 77 years of age. She was born in Harnett County on May 5th, 1941 to the late Paul Gregory and Ruby Stancil Gregory.
Doris married her high school sweetheart, Raymond, when she was 16 years old, and they enjoyed 40 years together and had two daughters. She worked as a teacher's assistant at Gentry Primary and Erwin High School. Doris loved animals, especially her beloved Starla and Vega. Her favorite holiday was Christmas; she loved the gift giving and spoiling her grandchildren. She was very much a homebody, who enjoyed keeping her home tidy and in order. She loved her flowers, birds and the squirrels who would visit her yard. She took great pride in all the memories she had captured in her numerous photo albums. Her grandson, Trevor Giles, remembers his grandmother as being a good listener and a very influential part of his life. Trevor expressed "I cannot say she was the best cook but she fed my soul".
Doris leaves behind the following members of her family: Two daughters: Sandy Wade and husband Ricky of Erwin and Jill Messer of Erwin; Two grandsons: Trevor Giles of Oakland, California and Jared Giles of Erwin; A granddaughter: Savanna Lloyd of Asheville; Two sisters: Linda Godwin and husband Bennie of Erwin and Terry Godwin and husband Jimmy of Dunn; and a very special friend whom she met in the first grade and remained close with throughout the years: Frances Clark Wood.
