Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, to Scottish immigrants Charles and Lilias Melville, Irene’s life was one of service, warmth, and devotion. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward Parker Gilbert (1993).
Irene’s generous heart and passion for helping others were reflected in her lifelong dedication to the Salvation Army, a church she embraced as a teenager. She found joy leading the Home League women’s fellowship and singing as a Songster, sharing her love of music and faith. Her favourite hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “He Giveth More Grace”.
For two decades, she managed food services at Idlewyld Manor, an assisted living facility. Later, she became a respected dietary manager and educator at Mohawk College, where she co-authored and taught the Food Services course, a college course required for employment in Long Term Care and Health Care facilities.
Irene loved to explore the world, whether through road trips, time spent at her second home in Seminole, Florida, or exciting adventures to places like China, Hawaii, and Europe. She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures—animals, cheering on the Tiger-Cats, camping and playing games, especially when she won.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family, where she made her deepest and most lasting impact—a legacy that continues to live on through the generations who follow. Irene was a loving and devoted mother to Rod (Louise), Margaret (Charlie), Sandra (Len), and Rob (Suzan). She was a cherished grandmother to Chris (Somer), Danielle, Brittany, Cassie (Luis), Tim, Jon, Emily (Randy), Kim, Willow, and Dane, and an adoring great-grandmother to Jade, Alexis, Zoey, Zane, Shaela, Noah, Fox, Isla, and Sloane.
Irene is survived by her sister Jessica, brother-in-law Dennis (Lois), and sisters-in-law Beryl and Bev. She was predeceased by her siblings Helen, Anna, and Bill. Her memory will be lovingly carried forward by her many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Irene lived by the phrase, “Remember who you are, what you are and what you represent”. Her life touched so many, and her legacy of kindness, love, and faith lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held in January with details to be provided once finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Irene’s memory be made to Mountain Citadel Salvation Army or Operation Smile.
