May 24, 1953 – January 27, 2018
After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Doug passed away in hospital at the age of 64, with his family by his side. Loving husband of Linda (nee Lee) for 27 years. Dear father to Lisa (Tyson Meadmore), Michelle Rondquist, Jeremy Batten, Ambrose Howard and Shane Batten. Cherished Grandpa to Thorin and Preston. Doug is survived by his sister Jan (Mel Fox), his brother Ernie Batten (Bev) as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Ernie and Elizabeth Batten; and by his sisters Judy (Don Habermehl) and Joan (Pete Draxler).
Doug was born in Yakima, WA and his family lived in Wapato, WA. They moved to Moses Lake, WA in 1955 and they lived there for 13 years until moving to Albany, OR where Doug finished his high school education. Doug went on to college and worked briefly in the Security Field until moving to Canada in 1975 where he was hired on with BC Hydro (now BC Transit) in Vancouver, BC. Doug moved his family to Sooke, BC in 1992 and transferred his employment to Victoria where he was employed until his death.
Doug was a man of strong Christian faith and a generous heart. His sense of humour and wonderful laugh drew people in. He loved entertaining friends and family with his magic tricks, dressing up as Santa and always playing the jokester. His loyalty was never more evident than in his dedication as a Seahawks fan. In his spare time Doug loved being outdoors and spending time with his family.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Rickardson and the ER team at the CDH, the Paramedic team, Dr. Burger, the Oasis Church family, as well as Amy and the staff at First Memorial Funeral Home for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Doug and the family during his illness and over the past few days.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 2pm in the Oasis Church, 3540 Auchinachie Rd, Duncan, BC. At Doug's request, in lieu of flowers, an opportunity will be given during the gathering to make a financial contribution to assisting families in need.
