Ruth was born in New York to William and Teresa (Weber) Hinck. Following graduation from nursing school, she enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Japan, where she met her future husband, Gordon. They married in 1959 and made their home in Duluth. Ruth worked as a nurse for St. Lukes Hospital before taking time out to raise her family. She was an active volunteer with many organizations including Miller Dwan Hospital, the Junior League and PEO. She loved spending winters in Sarasota, Florida and summers at their cabin on Lake Vermilion. Family and friends were an important part of her life. Her kind and generous spirit will be remembered often and greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Ruth is survived by her husband Gordon of 51 years; children, Debra (Jim) Sponnick, Jill (Jon) Widem, Gregory (Keri) Amundson, Karen (John) Meckey; nine grandchildren; and sister Barbara Poet.
A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Pilgrim Congregational Church 2310 East 4th St. Duluth. Memorials may be directed to Pilgrim Church, the American Cancer Society or St. Lukes Hospice.
