Caroline passed peacefully the evening of April 28th in her home after a short illness with members of her family at her side.
Caroline was raised in Hibbing, MN by Dr. Frederic and Lucile Carstens.She was born on June 26, 1929. She was united in marriage to Peter E. Bye Jr. on June 23, 1951.
Caroline was very active in her community, volunteering, contributing to, and serving on the Board of Directors of numerous organizations and was very passionate about animals and the environment. Some of the organizations included: Junior League of Duluth (Caroline was awarded Volunteer of the Year), St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation and Board, Depot Foundation Board, Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation, St. Louis County Heritage Society Foundation and Board, St. Paul’s Church Vestry and Altar Guild, The MS Society, Northwood’s Children’s Home Board, The Republican Party of Minnesota, Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, Family of Animal Allies, and many others during her lifetime.
Caroline enjoyed spending time with her family and community at the lake cabin watching and caring for her Humming Birds, looking out at Lake Superior from her home in Duluth, its wonder, the ships and sailboats on a warm summer evening and, of course, socializing with her many friends and her time with her lunch and bridge clubs. Caroline was an accomplished Classical Organist and also enjoyed sewing, needle point, knitting and gardening.
We will all miss her as a friend, confidant and the Family Matriarch.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter E. Bye Jr.; father, Dr. Frederic Carstens and mother, Lucile Carstens; her two grandsons, Matthew McGilley and Christian Lundberg and her beloved K9 companions, Tigger and Penny.
Caroline is survived by her children, Kathryn Elizabeth (Mark) McGilley, Caroline Judith (Thomas) Lundberg, Peter Carstens (Cynthia) Bye III; five grandchildren, Cara Lundberg (Armando) Perez and Rachel Lundberg, Patrick (Carol)McGilley, Peter (Lucy) McGilley and Kathleen McGilley (Scott) Asbury and ten great-grandchildren.
Memorial Service will be Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 10:00am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1710 E. Superior Street in Duluth. Reception to follow at the Kitchi Gammi Club. Interment will be Friday, May 2 at 2:30 pm at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, MN. Please leave a memory of Caroline or words of support for the family at www.bellbrothersjarvidowd.com
Peter and Caroline have created a fund that will provide scholarships for students at the University of Minnesota Duluth Medical School who will practice and serve families in rural Minnesota areas.
