He was born in Hibbing to Roy and Nadine Berg on April 7, 1980. Alan’s life was filled with music from an early age. He began regimented study of music with piano lessons at the age of five, and continued studying piano as well as saxophone, bassoon, organ, and composition through his teens. Alan studied organ in his teens with Pastor Erik Holleque of Hibbing through the Claribel Hamilton Scholarship Fund. Alan left northern Minnesota at 16 to attend the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Minneapolis, finishing high school there. He went on to study piano, composition, ethnomusicology, and electronic music at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Alan remained active as a performer, arranger, and composer, and served as organist at Elim Lutheran Church in Duluth. He also sang with Voices of Reason of Hibbing, the Duluth/Superior Symphony Chorus, Twin Ports Choral Project, and the Elim Lutheran Senior Choir. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists and Friends of the Felgemaker.
Alan is survived by his parents, sister, Laura (Phil) Holst and niece, Melanie of Plymouth MN, best friend, Eden Denny and Godson, Ephraim of Henderson NV, as well as numerous, aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Elim Lutheran Church, 6101 Cody St, Duluth MN 55807 and Sacred Heart Music Center, 201 West 4th Street, Duluth MN 55806. Checks should be made payable to "Sacred Heart Music Center-Felgemaker Organ."
