James Howard Butler, 55, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on September 6, 1968. Jim graduated from Perrysburg High School and the Ohio State University where he earned a degree in computer science. He married his wife, Sasha, in 2000. Jim and Sasha had their daughter, Maria, in 2008.
In addition to Sasha and Maria, Jim is survived by his mother Carol, father John, brother Mike, sister Chris, uncle Dick, niece Andrea and nephew Alex.
Family and friends will have many stories to remember him by: Jim traveling to Scandinavia to meet online acquaintances and make them true friends; Jim strumming a guitar at parties he hosted; Jim teaching a group of friends a new tabletop game; Jim pausing, mid-conversation, to brush out the tangles in his daughter’s hair when she was a toddler. These stories and many more celebrate Jim as a husband, a dad and a friend.
He loved to travel. In their years together, he and Sasha, and later, the two of them and Maria, had many adventures abroad and in the United States. More often than not, these trips were organized around visiting friends and family from the West Coast of the U.S. to Siberia. Back in the states, friends from all over found their way to Jim and Sasha’s dinner parties. Attending one often meant hearing a musical array of accents.
He was so proud of Maria and spoke of her often to his friends. From Cartoons and Pokémon when she was little to roller coasters and marching band when she became a teenager, Jim was an enthusiastic cheerleader and sharer of her passions. Of all his roles in life, the one he treasured above all was being Maria’s dad.
All who knew him over the years were struck by his knack for collecting such odd and wonderful groups of friends! Jim was at the center of all that. His curiosity and kindness, his capacity for friendship brought us all together. We shall miss him.
A celebration of life for James will be held Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Dr., Dublin, OH, followed by a visitation from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
