Fred John Buerkle was born February 7, 1929 in Chicago, IL, and passed away Thursday January 26, 2023, 2 weeks shy of his 94th birthday. He is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, son Kevin, sister Delores, and parents Fred and Anna (Heinzel) Buerkle. Fred served stateside in the U.S. Army for 2 years during the Korean War. He married his sweetheart, Phyllis Ryan, on a short leave from the Army in 1951, and they enjoyed almost 53 years together. He worked for Continental Can in Chicago and was transferred to Columbus in 1968. He retired from Continental Can in the early 80s. Fred and Phyllis were members of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. In his retirement he kept busy doing construction and odd jobs. He also loved watching his grandkids' and great grandkids' sporting events. He forged many lifelong friendships both at work and in his retirement and he loved all his 4-legged family, too. Fred kept dog treats in his pockets, which ensured a very excited greeting from all his grand-dogs and the neighborhood dogs. Fred and his sons, Fred and Brian, and his brother Chuck bonded during yearly fishing trips to Chuck's Wisconsin lake house. Fred loved to tinker and was never afraid to try to fix anything, even if he had to use paper clips and duct tape. Fred lived nearly 94 years full of life and passed away peacefully after a short illness, with all his favorite people having had the opportunity to say goodbye in his last few days. Those of us who survive Fred will miss him, his funny stories, and his sense of humor. We are his children Fred (Charlotte), Brian (Chris) and Jo Ann (Jim) Karam; grandchildren Jennifer (Joe) Warino, Matthew (Liz) Buerkle, Chris (Angie) Buerkle, Laura (Justin) Enix, Mark Buerkle, and Mia, Monica, and Ava Karam; great grandchildren Joey, Gianna, and Luca Warino, Izzy, Ryan, and Tommy Buerkle, Charlotte and Benjamin Buerkle, and Jayce and Finn Enix. Fred is also survived by siblings Nancy, Carolyn, Chuck, and Theresa. Viewing is Tuesday January 31 from 4:00-7:00 at Schoedinger Dublin at 5980 Perimeter Dr., with Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday February 1 at 11:00 at St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church at 7179 Avery Rd., Dublin, OH.
