Francis Byron Nelson, age 96, passed away on May 2, 2017 at Hinsdale Adventist Hospital, Hinsdale, Illinois. Byron was born June 7, 1920 in Geneva, Illinois, the second son of Walter and Emily Nelson of Geneva. He married Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Alice Vonck, the daughter of Joseph and Marie Vonck of Aurora, Illinois on August 30, 1941 in Aurora.
Byron’s early years were spent in Geneva and Batavia. He was a 1938 graduate of Batavia High School where he was a standout student and athlete, earning letters and holding records. He continued his studies and athletics at Cornell College, Mt Vernon, Iowa.
During WWII he served honorably in the United States Navy and like many others of “The Greatest Generation” they did what needed to be done with dignity and humility to build a better society. Following WWII and in the footsteps of his brother Ken, he became a member of the American Legion.
Byron enjoyed a successful career in Life Insurance sales and management, primarily in Galesburg, Olympia Fields and Geneva, Illinois. He was recognized numerous times for professional achievements and earning distinction as a member of CLU and as a CFP. Additionally, Byron was an active member in the community, including his long tenure in Galesburg where he held leadership roles in The United Way, The American Red Cross, Rotary Club, Jaycees, as well as helping to develop the Little League program and Community College in Galesburg.
His love of competition and teamwork stayed with him throughout his life. He was a dedicated and loyal fan of the Batavia Bulldogs and all things Notre Dame. On December 19, 2008 Byron was recognized by his alma mater, Batavia High, as the “Fan of the Year” and at 89 he had a hole-in-one.
Byron is survived by children: Donald B. (Kay) of Dallas, TX; F. Byron Jr. (Sharon) of Walnut Creek, CA; Charles F. (Laura) of Des Moines, IA; Thomas G. (Jacqueline) of Somers, WI; Jonathan M. ‘Jack’ (Lori) of Inlet Beach, FL; Christine N. Frailey (Dan) of Hinsdale, IL; Son-in-Law Thomas H. Herrick of San Antonio, TX; twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
Byron and Gerry loved life and most of all they loved the joy and laughter of their large family. Grandmother Nelson lived with them many years after Grandfather passed. They welcomed many into their home including their son Jack’s new friend from Russia, Boris Elpiner in the 70s.
Byron’s heart was broken with the death of his loving wife of nearly 75 years, Gerry. (Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva, Illinois, June 16, 2016). He was also proceeded in death by their loving daughter Emily Marie (Nelson) Herrick (August 29, 2008); their infant son Walter, and Byron’s older brother Kenneth (November 29, 1992).
Gerry and Byron had a marriage to be emulated. They were each other’s best friend and often were referred to as couple of elegance and class. They were loved, admired, and will be missed. The family would like to express gratitude and thanks to all those who extended a hand in friendship and kindness, especially John and Ann Burns and their family and friend group, Coach Jim and Silvia Roberts, the Lemons, Betsy Metcalf, Mary O’Brien, and the entire Delnor Hospital Staff and Community.
All friends and family are invited to the Memorial Mass and Celebration of Byron’s life to be held Saturday, July 15, 10:30 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Batavia, Illinois. Interment immediately after at Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva Illinois. Luncheon to follow.
