Marie Agathe Verna, age 82, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Sunday, August 27, 2023. She was born April 15, 1941 in La Romana on the Dominican Republic’s Caribbean coast. When she was a little girl, her family moved to Haiti, on the French side of the Island. Marie would later marry Joseph, whose childhood was opposite of Marie’s. Joseph was born in Haiti and as a child, moved to the Dominican Republic. They met and married when Joseph returned to Haiti as a young man. Marie grew up speaking French and Joseph grew up speaking Spanish. Marie studied to become a nursing aide and was a talented, professional seamstress. Many of her items were available for sale in boutiques. Following her husband, Joseph, Marie migrated to the United States in 1982, settling in Brooklyn, New York. She continued sewing for boutiques in Brooklyn, and later in life becoming a homemaker providing a home life for her family. A very caring woman, she was attentive to your every need and very passionate—a kiss on the cheek from Marie gave you a connection for life. Her family considered her a “Saint”. She was highly respected and revered by her family and friends for her support and her wisdom—from the young children to the elders. Reflections of Marie will be visible in the lives of generations to come. She loved to travel, especially returning to Haiti to visit family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Christophe and Eranie (Greffin) Michel.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joseph Verna; her son, Eddy Verna (Vera); her daughters, Marie G. Verna, Anna R. Philipe (Vontz), Dominique Morisset (Duke) and Mica Bruno (Steve); brothers, Gabriel Michel and Jean Claude Michel; grandchildren, Jonathan, Ashley, Stanley, Lydia, Lydie, Patricia, Mickelson, Tyler, Tyrah, Deborah, Quenny, Dochelle, Sean and Michael; great-grandchildren, Kai, Robert, Ricancia and Ja’sai; as well as numerous other extended family members and a host of friends.
