It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ramon Anthony Gomez. He departed from us at 8:34 a.m., November 27, 2023, surrounded by his family, at Ollie Steele Burden Manor after succumbing to the challenging and short, courageous battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. He was 70 years old.
Ramon was a resident of Geismar, Louisiana, born in Donaldsonville and was reared in Brusly McCall. Ramon graduated from Donaldsonville High in 1971. He received a Business Administration degree from Nicholls State University. He retired from the Louisiana Office of Youth Development as an administrator. He had previously worked for the Louisiana Department of Welfare in Donaldsonville. After his retirement he also worked for the Ascension Parish Office of Tourism and volunteered with other parishes in the area of tourism. His true life vocation was husband, father, and grandfather to the loves of his life - his wife Debra, children Evan and Erin, and grandchildren Penelope and Ronin.
Ramon was the epitome of a “Southern Gentleman.” He was known for his warm smile, gentle spirit, and unwavering kindness. His passion and dedication to his family and friends and everyone he met did not go unnoticed. He delighted us with family memories and all the stories behind them. He loved traveling. He had a true passion for antiques, especially searching for them with his beloved daughter Erin. He inspired and encouraged his son Evan to develop his artistic talent. His grandchildren delighted in all the fun trips with their “Poppa.”
Ramon is survived by his son, Evan Phillip Gomez (Kristen), daughter, Erin Claire Gomez (fiancé Mike Hall) and two grandchildren, Penelope and Ronin Gomez. He is also survived by his sister, Charlene Gomez Ourso and brothers, Gary Gomez (Suzanne) and Mark Gomez (Michelle Hebert), aunt, Rose Martinez (Tony), uncle, Gerald Medine (Valerie), niece, Nori Gomez Faucheux (Chad) and nephews, Fred Gomez (Mandy) and David Gomez (Desiree Maranan),
great nephews, Luke and Logan Faucheux and Chance and Cohen Gomez, brother-in-law Elmer O. Bourgeois, Jr., sisters-in-law: Julie Bourgeois, Kerry Anastasio Chelette and Sharon Grezaffi Bourgeois, and godchildren Nori Gomez Faucheux and Perric Falcon.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 37 years, Debra Sue Bourgeois Gomez, parents Frederick "Freddie" Joseph Gomez and Earline Theresa Medine Gomez, sister-in-law Barbara Bourgeois Achee and brothers-in-law James Achee and John Bourgeois.
In facing the challenges of this rare and devastating disease (CJD), Ramon displayed incredible courage and grace. His family and friends stood by him with unwavering support, cherishing the moments and memories during this difficult journey.
The family wishes to thank the medical staffs of the Baton Rouge General Hospital, Baton Rouge Rehabilitation, Ollie Steele Burden Manor and St. Joseph Hospice for their expertise, comfort, compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
The funeral services will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Smoke Bend, LA. Visitation is from 8:00-11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment is in the church cemetery.
