

Ross, Mary Ellen – 78, It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and great-aunt in the presence of her family at Tideview Terrace, Digby on January 31, 2011. Mary was born on April 30, 1932 in Victory, Anna. Co. to the late Clayton A. and Eleanor (Darres) Hewey. Mary was the middle child of the family and grew up in Victory, Bear River, Deep Brook and Smith’s Cove. She married in June 1950 and resided in Culloden, Digby Co. for nearly 60 years. She then took up residence at Annapolis Royal Nursing Home, Assisted Living Wing; in February 2010, and then Tideview Terrace, Digby, in June 2010. Mary was a devoted wife and close friend to her late husband, Russell Oliver Ross, who predeceased her in June 2008. Mary is survived by her children, Rosemary (Roger) Wright, Clementsvale, Anna. Co; Janet (Terrance) O’Neil, Mt. Pleasant, Digby Co; Russell J. (Janet) Ross, Bruce (Jane) Ross, Anthony Ross (Lesa), all of Culloden, Digby Co. She also leaves to mourn ten grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Jason, Robbie, Billie Jo, Maggie, Sam, Corey, Brooke and Lydia; along with her brother, Ronald (Juanita) Hewey, Moshchelle, Anna. Co; sisters Francis (Willard) Trimper, Bear River East, Anna. Co; Thelma (Victor) Height, Conway, Digby Co; Florence “Twin” Snow, Hamilton, ON; Aileen Henshaw, Upper Clements, Anna. Co; Joyce Lewis, Bayview, Digby Co; and Marina (Reg) Smith, Weymouth; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces , nephews and cousins. Mary was predeceased by brother Robert Hewey, and sisters Jean Robbins, Elizabeth Riley, as well as two siblings in infancy, five brothers-in-law, and two sisters-in-law. Prior to her marriage, Mary worked at Harbour View House and Mountain Gap Inn, Smith’s Cove. After years of raising her family, Mary returned to work as an Assistant Housekeeper at the Pines Hotel, Digby. Mary’s greatest joys in her life were her children and grandchildren. Many days were spent on the shores of the Bay of Fundy behind her home where she and they would gather dulse, periwinkles, Irish moss, and enjoy the cool breeze. Mary enjoyed, until her illness overtook her, tending her flower gardens, knitting, crocheting and cooking for her family. Mary also enjoyed shopping at Frenchy’s. Mary was a long outstanding member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Digby. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9pm Thursday from Jayne’s Funeral Home, 7 Birch St. Digby (245-2525), with prayers at 8pm. Funeral mass 11am Friday, in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Digby, Father Keith Billard presiding. Interment to follow in the family plot at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, King St., Digby. Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of NS, Alzheimer Society, or Tideview Terrace. Whenever we think of you, we will be thankful, thankful for the happy times when we laughed and for the sad times which brought us closer. Thankful for your love and guidance, and most of all, thankful for you. Rest in peace, dear mother. United again with your husband, and our earthly father and all the Heavenly Angels.
