Ray Unger passed away on June 25, 2020, just 19 days after his 85th birthday. He was an amazing man
not only to the people that loved him, but also to his community. Ray was married to the love of his life, Marilyn, for 63 years. Together they have 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. His families’ homes are filled with countless gifts from his woodshop that he made through the years that they will cherish forever.
Ray was the shop/yearbook teacher in Dewitt for 25 years. You all know his work. You see his infamous
fire breathing panther under the Friday night lights every time our Panthers score a touchdown. He has left his mark with similar projects in every community he has lived in.
Ray was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare cancer of the blood, and it was not kind to him the
last couple of years. He was very strong though, and if you would ask him how he was feeling, it was
always, “fine”. He was a very funny, creative, detailed man who gave amazing hugs and awful knee
claw tickles. We know he will be missed, not just by those who loved him, but by everyone that was
blessed to have known him. He was legendary.
According to Ray’s wishes, an informal celebration of his life will take place on July 11, 2020 at 2:00
PM at the home of his daughter, Diane Blakenship (308 Franklin, Dewitt, MI 48820). A sharing of
memories will begin at 3:00 PM. Please bring your memories, chairs, belly laughs, suspenders, pocket
protectors and whatever else you wish to honor his memory and celebration of his wonderful life.
