We mourn the passing of Reverend Philip C. Cleary, a man with a heart larger than life. Father Phil, 71 years of age dedicated his life to be a spiritual guide and source of strength to thousands of orphaned children and youth. He was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure to know him.
Ordained in 1979, Father Phil first served in two Chicago parishes. He was elected President of the Association of Priests and later joined the Board of Directors of the National Federation of Priests’ Councils. During this time, he learned about NPH and the mission of Father William B. Wasson, the founder. Initially a volunteer for one summer, Father Phil quickly felt called to stay, embarking on what became a lifelong commitment to the children of NPH.
Father Phil served for many years as National Director of NPH Mexico before becoming Executive Director of NPH International. He resided at NPH’s main home in Miacatlán, Morelos, Mexico, where he dedicated his life to the organization’s mission and the children he so dearly loved. While visiting family in Chicago, he always longed to go back to Mexico which he called his “home”.
Philip is survived by his 6 siblings, Paul (Sue Ellen), John (Judy), Ann (Hugh) Barton, Kate (Jerry) Bonomo, Bill (Janice), Jim (Julie), Nephews: Sean (Catherine), Michael (Michelle), Nieces: Kirsten and Lauren. Great Nephews: Charles, Jacob and Jack, Cousin: Mike Thornton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Bud and Virginia Cleary
