Mildred “Millie” Roman passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, September 17 at the age of 94. Millie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Michael Archangelo Roman, her parents, Romilda & Antonio Scalzitti; her siblings & in-laws Johnny, Guy (Tommie), Sue (Tony) & Tony (Mary).
Millie is lovingly remembered by her children, Valerie (Jim Halston), Laura & Michael and her grandchildren, Jessica, Samantha & Maddie and her granddogs, Leo & Lucy, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Millie was born in Chicago, IL on October 12, 1929. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Chicago in 1947. Her first job was at a bakery. She then went on to work as a secretary at Sears Corporation. Millie married Michael Roman in 1959 and was a stay at home mom who volunteered at Our Lady of Ransom School & Church. After raising three children, she went back to work as a secretary for Pieroth Wine, followed by Lutheran General Hospital (Parkside Center & Dept. of Medicine). Millie retired in 1999 to care for her husband with Myasthenia Gravis until his death in 2007.
Millie enjoyed making her famous lasagna for family and friends. She also enjoyed dining out. Her favorite was the gnocchi at Nona Sylvia’s in Park Ridge. She loved to read health and wellness books as well as autobiographies of her favorite movie stars, along with the newspaper and assorted magazines where she would clip out articles of interest for various family and friends. Listening to music, especially, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and many other crooners was her passion. She enjoyed slapstick comedy like Jerry Lewis and Jim Carey. Scrabble and Bingo (especially when she won a prize) were also favorite past-times. She was a life-long Cubs fan who watched all the games on tv and loved to visit Wrigley Field. She will be best remembered for being a kind and gentle soul who always radiated happiness and warmth.
A visitation for Millie will be held Monday, September 23, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner Street, Des Plaines, IL. Prayers will take place Tuesday, September 24 at 10:15 AM at the funeral home, then processing to St. Paul of the Cross Church, 320 S. Washington Ave., Park Ridge for a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. A graveside service follows Mass at All Saints Cemetery, 700 North River Road., Des Plaines.
