Lawson “Lon” Lunde, age 83, of Waukegan, formerly of Des Plaines, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2019. Lon was born in Chicago on November 22, 1935, the son of Arvid and Evelyn (Anda) Lunde. He began playing the piano by ear at the age of four, and later was known to Americans as panelist “Lonny” through his eight years as a Quiz Kid. After his “Quiz Kids” days were over, he graduated from Maine High School and then studied music at the Chicago Musical College. He earned a degree in Psychology from Northwestern University in 1957. In the Army, his training in psychology led to an assignment supervising intelligence exams. Aside from his stint in the Army, most of his career has involved music. While Lon played piano for a living, composing was his main interest. Most of the music he wrote was for the saxophone, even though he never played that instrument. Lon loved watching sports, coaching little league and was a life-long Cubs fan. He also enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with friends and family.
Lon was a faithful member of St. Zachary Church in Des Plaines. He is survived by his two children: April (Chris) Barron and Alan (Cindy) Lunde; five grandchildren: Maya and Andie Barron, Matthew, Amanda and Angela Lunde, and his niece, nephews and friends. Lon was preceded in death by his sister, Marcia Johnson.
Visitation will be held Tuesday September 10, from 4-8 pm with a religious service at 6:00 pm at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner St (corner of Northwest Hwy/Rt 14 and Rand Rd) Des Plaines. There will be a private family burial at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
