Shirley Smith was born in Denver on July 10, 1926 where she resided for 91 active years of her 92 year life span. She attended and graduated with honors from West High School in 1943. She then completed two years of business school and entered the secretarial profession. She was a secretary for various companies including Sterling Life Insurance and Marsh & McLennan. She retired as an executive secretary in 1984.
She married Donald Smith on March 29, 1948. They divorced in 1963 and later remarried in 1968. They divorced a final time when Don moved to Arkansas upon his retirement in the mid 1980’s.
Shirley’s passions included ballroom dancing, travel and family poker games. Earlier in life she was an accomplished seamstress who made many beautiful professional clothes, tailored suits and casual clothing. She very much enjoyed bowling, water skiing and fishing during her years with Don. She did volunteer work for the Colorado Historical Society, which included modeling outfits worn by Molly Brown in many fashion shows over the years.
Shirley was an incredibly self-sufficient woman who lived independently until 2018 when, due to a broken hip, she entered assisted living in Longmont. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband Donald and their youngest son Kenneth. She is survived by her daughter Kathleen (John) and son Gordon as well as six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
