Robert Lee Harris was born to the union of John Thomas Harris and Ella Bell Paschal Harris in Eatonton, Georgia on July 22, 1922. Robert attended public schools and graduated from the Union Baptist High School in Athens, Georgia. Robert accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age and was a kind, thoughtful, and loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews and to his entire family. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Bob.”
Robert was drafted into the military and received the World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged with two years of gallant service. Robert Moved to Chicago in the late 1940’s and began a well-loved career as a Dietician for the Veterans Administration for approximately 35 years. He served in this position loyally and was known for his friendliness, servant leadership, and his compassion and concern for others. Robert and his wife, Peggy, were charter members of the Ingleside Whitfield United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Robert loved the fellowship. He enjoyed cooking for the United Methodist Men’s Saturday Breakfasts. He was also a dedicated member of the United Methodist Men, and various other organizations of which he served faithfully and with generosity. Robert was known his love of Chicago sports teams, especially the Cubs and the Bears. Robert was a dedicated block club member of the 76th street Park Manor Association. He cherished his community and reside there are over 50 years. In 2012, Robert and Peggy relocated to Denver, Colorado to join their nieces and their families.
Robert was peacefully called home to glory on Friday, March 22nd in the early morning. Those who inherit his legacy add memory are his loving wife, Peggy Elizabeth; his nieces, Anita Scott (the late Jon W. Scott), Cassandra Mason (Arthur), Patricia O’Neal (Derrick); nephew James Thomas Harris, Jr.; great nieces and nephews, Brandon, James Thomas III, Danielle, John Wayne Jr., Shauna, Kristin, Bobby; and beloved cousin, Sydney Paschal, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; as well as a host of special cousins, in-laws, relatives and the special friends at Autumn Green at Midway Village in Chicago, Illinois.
