Debbie Drake was born as Velda Louise Bellah in 1930 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was interested in dancing and performing from a young age. She moved to New York City to pursue a career in show business and changed her name to Debbie Drake.
She still has a loyal fan base and lasting impact on the fitness and wellness industry. She was a trailblazer and an inspiration for many women who wanted to improve their health and happiness. She was also a pioneer in the field of media and marketing as she used television, records, books and products to reach and influence millions of people.
She developed her own exercise routine that combined stretching, breathing, and dancing. She started teaching her exercise method to other women and gained popularity and recognition. She was invited to appear on several TV shows, such as The Jack Paar Show, the Johnny Carson Show, the Mike Douglas Show, The David Frost Show, here she demonstrated her exercises and gave tips on health and beauty. She also recorded a series of exercise albums, such as Debbie Drake’s Keep in Shape, which sold over a million copies.
In 1960, Debbie Drake was offered her own TV show by the National Television Network, which later became PBS. The Debbie Drake Show was the first exercise show to be broadcast nationally in the U S and reached over 175 stations and 20 million viewers. The show was aimed at women, especially housewives who wanted to stay fit and attractive at home.
The show featured Debbie Drake wearing a leotard and tights, and performing her exercises to upbeat music. She also gave advice on topics such as diet, fashion, grooming and etiquette. She was friendly, enthusiastic, and encouraging, and often addressed her viewers as “girls” or “ladies”. She also used catchy slogans, such as “Don’t forget to keep that tummy tucked in”, and “Remember you’re never too old to look young”.
