Cynthia Sherwood

Cynthia was born on September 15, 1925 in New York to Samuel and Rose Lewis, who had emigrated from Eastern Europe to the U.S. At New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, New York, Cynthia met the love of her life, Daniel Sherwood, whom she married on June 15, 1947. She obtained a degree from NYU and went on to receive her Master’s in Counseling from Rutgers University.

For decades, she worked as a high school guidance counselor at Pennsauken High School and Cherry Hill West High School, both in New Jersey, where she was greatly admired by her students. Cynthia and Dan were phenomenal parents to their two children and active members of their community in Cherry Hill.

During the later season of her life, she pursued her passion for writing poetry and in 2020 published her book of poems, Thoughts While Grieving.

Cynthia is survived by her children, Leslie and David; her grandchildren, Scott, Stacey (Wayne), Emily (Brandon) and Rebecca (Bo); and 11 great-grandchildren. Everyone who knew her will miss her sharp wit, strong convictions, her love of the written word, and her commitment to learning every day of her life.

Eleanor Roosevelt, whom Cynthia once had the pleasure of meeting, said: “Success must include two things: the development of an individual to his utmost potentiality and a contribution of some kind to one’s world.” Cynthia’s friends and family will treasure her memory in the peace of knowing that, in exactly those ways, her life was a resounding success.

A graveside service for Cynthia will be held Monday, February 27, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens, 11520 State Road 7, Boynton Beach, FL 33473.
