Cheryl was born the third of three girls in Marion, Ohio to Verland and Phyllis Rorick on July 20, 1956. She went to school at Harding High School and shortly after graduation met her future husband, Richard Schorr. For their first date, she agreed to a tennis match — even though she had never played a day in her life and had to go out and buy a racket.
The two were married June 12, 1977 in Marion, Ohio. Before exchanging vows, Cheryl studied Judaism and became a proud member of the faith. Just a few years after moving from California to Florida, she became a bat mitzvah and over the years was an active member of the local synagogues wherever her family resided.
Cheryl worked as a secretary for GTE for eight years before becoming a mother to her two daughters, Michelle and Abigail. She was a constant fixture during their school years, serving as a volunteer for everything from choir trips to the book fair. She was a master Mahjong and canasta player, so much so that she was the friendly face who taught new players how to play.
She also enjoyed cooking for and spending time with extended family, including large family dinners she had planned down to the minute. A true Midwestern girl, Cheryl could become someone’s best friend in just minutes, including and especially at the Publix checkout line. She was also the first to pay a stranger a compliment, from a nurse in scrubs to a passerby in a plain t-shirt.
Cheryl was promoted to Nana in 2011 with the birth of her grandson, Evan. Watching him grow was her greatest joy, as well as caring for her family’s beloved golden retriever Mindy and two grand puppies, Westly and Delray.
Cheryl is preceded in death by her father, Verland Rorick.
Cheryl is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard Schorr; mother Phyllis Rorick; sisters Mary Jo (Bob) Putman and Cathy (Jerry) Kightlinger; daughters Michelle (Jason) Jacobson and Abigail (Sean) Perry; and grandson Evan Jacobson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at IJ Morris at Star of David Cemetery of the Palm Beaches and will be officiated by Rabbi Michael Gold.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Parkinson Disease Association - South Florida Chapter can be made in Cheryl’s memory.
