Vera Beatrice McFarlin, 66, was born the morning of September 18, 1952 in Town Creek, Alabama. She was the youngest of 12 children born to the late Rev. Marshall Garner Sr. and Mrs. Ollie B. Garner. On the evening of Friday, July 26, 2019, Vera passed away peacefully in the presence of her family and loved ones at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. She is now in her eternal home, and will continue to live in the comfort and grace of her Lord and Savior.
At a young age Vera confessed her faith and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. She attended Choctaw Road Baptist Church where she grew her spirit and enjoyed the fellowship of her Sunday School class.
Vera is a graduate of Alabama A&M University where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. It was here that she met her husband, the late Larry Darnell (Mac) McFarlin Sr., whom she wed on January 4, 1974.To this union was born two sons, Larry Jr. and Brian, and one daughter, Tiffany.
Vera was a “people person” who loved to make friends and was always willing to show warmth and kindness to complete strangers. Early in her career, her willingness to help and serve others led her to become a special education teacher. She continued to feed this passion as director and co-founder of The Lighthouse Transitional Center, where she taught basic living skills to adults with developmental disabilities. In her final years, she enjoyed spending time with her friends, children, grandchildren, and Sammy - her Yorkshire Terrier.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband Larry McFarlin Sr. She is survived by her sons Larry McFarlin Jr., Moore, OK, and Brian McFarlin, Austin, TX, as well as her daughter Tiffany McFarlin, Midwest City, OK. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren - Isaiah, Layla, Lena, Warren and Lauryn, daughters-in-law Monica McFarlin and Lea McFarlin; five brothers Rev. Marshall Garner Jr., Freddie (Vivian) Garner, Rev. Leroy (Earnestine) Garner, David (Effie) Garner, and Earnest (Doris) Garner; and four sisters Deloris (Curtis) Foster, Pearl (Jimmy) White, Dorothy (William) Davis, and Racine (Levert) Crutch.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vera's honor to the American Diabetes Association.
