Leo was born in Caney, Oklahoma during the Great Depression when times were tough and many didn't know where the next meal was coming. His childhood was difficult yet instilled a strong belief in family, duty and Country. When he was seventeen he asked his mother, Lila Mae, for permission to miss his senior year of high school and join the fight beginning in World War II. He joined the Coast Guard and participated in supplies replenishment in the Pacific.
He was extremely proud of his service duties and told many stories about both combat and normal shipside duties while standing around the campfire during deer season and fishing trips. He was a man's-man and had definite opinions about politics, duty, family responsibilities and taking care of family.
After WWII, as he liked to call it, he rejoined the Navy and joined the fight in the Korean War. Again, his obligation to Country called him for duty and he again served in combat and supply lines. We are all proud of Leo and his service to his country.
Leo and his wife, Anna Mae, raised two children Vernon Lloyd and Donna Kay Gatlin-Jackson to adulthood. He was extremely proud of his grandsons Brandon Chase and Jeremy Chad Jackson and their wives, Jessica and Bethany, respectively.
The light would shine in his eyes when his great grandchildren were present, Rylie, Josiah, Jonah and Scarlett. He would tend to follow them around waiting to catch one if they fell or make sure they didn't fall into a bump or bruise. He finally realized he couldn’t catch’em all so he just followed to watch.
He will be remembered and cherished for his love of family and friends. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Sunny Lane Cemetery, Del City, Oklahoma.
