Born on August 7, 1931 in Colombia, she was the daughter of late Roberto Garcia and Juana Hurtado. She was the 8th of 16 children and lovingly cared for her siblings like a mother after their mother’s passing at a young age. In her young adult life, she became a teacher and her job required traveling to the poorest towns in the middle of a civil war in Colombia. She was a tough lady and both sides of the conflict respected her and her mission. At 29, she met her soulmate, and within a year they were married, forming a beautiful family with three daughters. Over the years, her family continued to grow with the birth of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During her 89 years of life, her loving kindness and care for her family and those around her became her greatest legacy.
She is survived by her daughters, Maria Helena Yepes, Adriana Baltar, and Margarita Pomaranski; siblings, Consuelo Garcia, Olga Garcia, and Leopoldo Garcia; grandchildren, Isabel Cristina Yepes, Diana Correa, Angelica Piccinelli, Carolina Salazar, Gustavo Salazar, Daniela Meng, Jonathan Baltar and nine great-grandchildren. Bertha is preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years and the love of her life, Gilberto Yepes.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bertha’s memorial service to be held at St. Vincent Catholic Church, 6350 NW 18th Street Margate, FL 33063 Friday, May 7, 2021 at 10AM. The church kindly requires all in attendance to wear face masks.
