William Chandler was born in Virginia on May 11, 1925. He was raised in New Rochelle, NY by Octavia Chandler, his beloved mother along with his 5 sisters, Annie, Eva, Esther, Viola, and Irene. He was a proud Veteran of World War II. He served in the Army as a longshoreman in New Guinea, South Pacific. He proudly wore his WW II Veterans baseball hat daily. He worked for New York City as a transit worker for 25 years. Upon retirement, he worked part-time as a school bus driver for Suffolk Transportation. He was known to his riders as “Mr. Bill.” He met and married his late wife Rosemarie in 1961. They were married for 49 years until her passing in 2010.William was the father of 10 children and several grand and great-grandchildren, who he leaves to cherish his memory. Though William “Papa” was small in stature, he had a large, kind heart and loved his family. He was loved dearly and will be missed.
