John “Jack” F. McKeon, a proud Irishman and lifelong New Yorker, passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on February 20, 1935, in the Bronx, NY, he leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and unwavering strength.
Jack was the beloved husband of Mae McKeon, and the two shared a love that spanned over six decades. A proud and enthusiastic supporter of the Yankees, Jack's early years were marked by his role as a bat boy for the team, fostering a passion for the sport that would stay with him throughout his life.
In November 1958, Jack dedicated himself to a noble calling, joining the ranks of the FDNY as a firefighter. His commitment and love for his profession were evident, and he rose through the ranks, ultimately retiring as a lieutenant in May 1994. Throughout his career, he embodied the spirit of a true firefighter – courageous, selfless, and always ready to serve.
Beyond his professional life, Jack was a calm and steady presence for his family. He cherished the simple things in life and found joy in the everyday moments. A quote by Annie Dillard, "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives," encapsulates Jack’s philosophy on life. He spent his days with and for his family, creating a lifetime of cherished memories.
Jack was a loving father to his children, Arlene McKeon, Brian McKeon, Colleen Sarno, and Kerry McKeon, and grandfather to Marissa Cerone, Sam Cerone, and Michael Cerone.
Jack will be remembered as a man who faced life with courage, love, and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
