My thoughts and prayers to Carole and all of the family upon the passing of Don.  Many wonderful memories from the days at Nat West and later at Republic.  Don was truly a great “Credit Man” ,  firm in his principles but always open to discussion.
Will miss his emails and smile as I pass the Sound Beach home.

My deepest condolences to the Hnis Family.  Don and I worked together at Bankers Trust Company where he was both a mentor and a dear friend.

Since Cindy is my oldest friend...I've had the pleasure of having Mr. Hnis in my life for at least 50 years!  When I think of Mr. Hnis, I think first of his smile and then of his inviting eyes.  Spending endless hours, especially as a child and teen in the Hnis household filled my life with love, laughter and genuine kindness and compassion.  Whether we were chatting at the kitchen table, getting a ride to the movies or sitting in the backyard with Max, Mr. Hnis always made me feel as if my time in that moment was of the most importance to him.  Over the years Mr. Hnis and my Dad became besties and that was a true friendship of depth.  When my father passed, nearly 13 years ago, Mr. Hnis and I cried, multiple times together.  He made sure to always tell me that my Dad was proud of me and how much he missed my Dad. We never left a visit without exchanging hugs and "I love yous."  

To all of the family...believe your father, brother, grandfather and husband is at peace and no longer struggling with pain.  I am certain he's missing you all tremendously because he truly stood for love, kindness, fun and always family first!  Anyone who knew him was truly blessed! Love you all!


I worked with Don at Bankers Trust (1960-1999) both in middle market lending and then the Private Bank. My first memory is Don being my roommate at one of the off-site conferences for one or two nights. He was a great down to earth guy-great sense of humor-real patriot-and a good lending officer. I will miss Don &  his emails over the years after we both retired.

A great father, husband grand father and man.  So glad I got to know him over the years.  I will miss hearing him say “counselor” every time we met.

I feel blessed to have grown up across from the bungalow and enjoyed time there and the beach all those many years ago and a few in the recent past.   A lot of family fun, laughs and relaxation and swimming at the beach are wonderful memories and are a treasure!  You are all in our thoughts and prayers as you celebrate a life well lived!
