Judy Richter was born April 30, 1960 to Henry Richter (of blessed memory) and Virginia Richter. Informed that their daughter had Down syndrome, Henry and Ginny chose to take Judy home rather than placing her in a state institution, which was common practice at the time. Judy grew up in Decatur with older brothers Don and David and younger sister Marcia. Very much her own person, Judy was the joyful heart of family life and levity.
Judy attended and graduated from Carver Developmental Center and for years was employed at a CDD sheltered workshop, where she was beloved for her playfulness and authenticity. Judy inspired a wide circle of friends who were encouraged by her compassion and affection; some felt called to careers in special education — all were enriched for having known her.
Judy was baptized at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She delighted in singing hymns, making her generous weekly offering, and living out the life of faith in her own way.
Judy died peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 16, surrounded by her loving family and attentive caregiver Nell Matthews. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at Roselawn (741 Danville Rd SW, Decatur) at 11am Saturday, November 19, preceded by 10am family visitation.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley (240 Johnston St SE, Decatur, AL 35601).
