Robert Hamilton (Bob) Haines of Beavercreek, passed away unexpectedly on October 31 at age 85. He was a proud graduate of Chaminade High School, General Motors Institute, and Xavier University. Bob retired from GM after 30 years of dedicated service.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. Robert Haines, U.S. Army and Mary Conover Haines.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Sue (Englert) Haines, sons, Roger (Nancy) Haines of Columbus, Ron (Mickey) Haines of Kettering, and daughter, Angie (Bryan) Hawkins of Beavercreek. Also, brothers, Jim (Theresa) Haines of Akron, and Dave (Terry) Haines of Vandalia.
Bob was an avid sports fan. He loyally cheered on his Ohio State Buckeyes and Dayton Flyers. He loved the game of soccer and enjoyed coaching many teams over the years. Watching his children and grandchildren play soccer brought him so much joy.
Bob was a proud grandfather to ten extraordinary grandchildren, Tori and Charlie Haines, Rachel, Grace, Jake, Sam, and Will Haines, and Kellie, Macy, and Bailey Hawkins.
-Bob Haines-
Throughout his lifetime, Bob owned 9 Corvettes!
‘58, ‘64, ‘64, ‘68, ‘68, ‘72, ‘73, ‘74, ‘01
Corvettes are a passion he shared with his brother Dave.
Bob was a paperboy in his youth, so he could have money to buy baseball cards! He and his brother Jim LOVED their baseball cards.
Bob enjoyed running. He ran several half-marathons. Many who ran alongside him had trouble keeping up!
Bob was a runner well into his 70’s, played basketball into his 70’s, too, and did pushups into his 80’s. We often said he was in better shape than any of his children!
Bob’s favorite place was the beach.
Bob’s favorite music was Jazz and Ragtime.
Bob was fiercely competitive in basketball and soccer, which is a trait he definitely passed down to his children and grandchildren!
On Saturday nights, Bob’s kids and all their friends knew that there’d be Little Caesar’s pizza at the Haines House. There was always enough for anyone who stopped in.
Bob may or may not have snuck into various places as a teenager, such as basketball gyms and KilKare Speedway.
Bob was a huge fan of popcorn. He made it from scratch every Friday and Saturday night. He even had a special popcorn pan that made it taste extra delicious.
Bob was a gentleman-he took Sue’s car to the gas station every week to fill it. She also never opened her own car door, because he always did it for her.
Every dog loved Bob Haines! Seriously…every dog.
Bob and Sue started their own company buying and selling car parts called, “Haines Automotive”. Sometimes, they recruited their little grandchildren to help them count auto parts and toss parts into boxes to fill orders!
As sons of a soldier who passed while serving in the U.S. Military, Bob and his brothers share great love of country and respect for the military and all those who protect this country today. Bob’s dad, Robert Haines Sr. was a member of the U.S. Army. Sadly, he passed when his 3 boys were young. Yet somehow, without his fine example to follow, the 3 Haines boys grew up to be remarkable men, husbands, and fathers. They have all created incredible families and positively impacted countless lives.
Services for Bob will be at Ascension Catholic Church, 2025 Woodman Drive, Kettering, OH on Friday, November 17. Visitation with family and friends will be held at 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Honorflight.org or CJeagles.org.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.tobias-fh.com for the Haines family.
