Robert “Bob” Edward Begley, age 82, of West Carrollton, OH, passed away March 27th, 2021 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol Konicki Begley, and children Laura (Fred) Underwood and Doug Begley. Bob is preceded in death by his parents John G. Begley and Marie Lauterbach Begley; his brothers Jack (Leonne) Begley, Roy (Patricia) Begley; his sisters Jean (Jim) Donovan, Ruth (Jack) Albers, and Patricia Van Schaik. He is also survived by his brother-in-law John Van Schaik, who was an important father figure in his life, as well as numerous beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and several great-great-nieces and great-great nephews. Bob was a 1957 graduate of Chaminade High School and attended both Georgetown College, KY, and University of Dayton. He served in the Marine reserves from 1962-64. Bob worked in logistics command at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, retiring in 1995 as a Data Systems Manager after 27 years of service. With his analytical mind, he was later recruited by a government contractor for his expertise in the computer language COBOL and enjoyed working part-time from 1999 to 2011. Bob was an optimist who had tremendous love for his family and friends. He was a sports enthusiast – he played high school football, and over the years, was active in many bowling and golf leagues and softball teams. Bob often served as assistant coach or volunteer for his children’s baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball teams. He enjoyed playing cards with his “Poker Dog” buddies, which included his brothers-in-law Tom Konicki and Gene Jablinski. He loved Ohio State football and basketball. He was an avid UD Flyers basketball fan, regularly cheering them from the stands along with his son Doug or good friend Bob Patterson. Bob’s greatest sports passion was IndyCar racing – he attended 58 Indianapolis 500 races over his lifetime. In 2003, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of riding in an IndyCar via the “Indy Racing Experience”. This passion garnered him a write-up in a 2012 Dayton Daily News article for the 100th Anniversary of the Indianapolis 500. A viewing will be held on Monday, April 5th, 2021 at Tobias Funeral Home – Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Avenue, Dayton, OH 45429 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. A Celebration of Bob’s Life will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 6th, 2021 at 10:00am, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton OH.
