Peggy Joan Albrecht

Albrecht, Peggy Joan (nee Altenburg) of Lisle, IL, formerly Oakwood, Ohio, died January 16, 2015, age 86. Born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, July 21, 1928 to Claude Ephraim Altenburg and Mary Marguerite Altenburg, (nee Jones), Peggy was raised in Dayton, Ohio and began music lessons at an early age. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with Madame Giannini-Gregory. In 1951 she married baritone and Dayton area physician, Dr. Joseph Albrecht, and the singing duo enjoyed performing concerts together for many years. In 1953 Peggy was the winner of the Cincinnati Opera competition and performed with the company the following season. She was a frequent soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dayton Bach Society, the Dayton Music Club, and the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was honored in 1977 when the Joseph Albrecht family was named the “Ohio Musical Family of the Year” by the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. Peggy enjoyed teaching her many voice students over the years and was a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and Mu Phi Epsilon. Peggy is survived by her daughter, Gretchen Canfield, her sons-in-law, Dwight Canfield and Randall Easterbrook, her six grand-children, Marguerite Easterbrook, George Easterbrook, Hope Easterbrook, Jared Canfield, Miriam Canfield, and Grace Canfield, sister Alyce Lane, and dear nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 63 years, her beloved daughter, Heidi Easterbrook, dear sisters Carmie Peth, Harriet Lehman, Betty Gustin, brother Claude Altenburg, and her infant grand-daughter, Mariel Frances Easterbrook.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church 125 N. Wilkinson St. Dayton, Ohio 45402. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peggy’s name.
