MURPHY, Mary C., age 102 of Centerville, passed away Monday, February 13, 2017 at St. Leonard Community where she was a resident for 21 years. Mary was born in Dayton on November 23, 1914 to the late Carl and Irene Tate Hohl. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James Patrick Murphy and siblings, Karl, Dick, Rita, and Ann (Gretchen). She is survived by her sons, Dr. James J. (Shirley) Murphy and John P. (Debra) Murphy; grandchildren, Dr. Michael (Anita), Patrick, and Joey Murphy; and brothers, Martin and Jack Hohl and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary graduated from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis,1937, then worked in the ER in Noblesville. June 1941she enlisted in the U.S. Army and advanced to the rank of Captain while serving in the 39th Evacuation Hospital as a nurse anesthetist in General Patton’s 3rd Army throughout Europe, always within a few miles of the front line. Post war she earned a degree in nursing education, worked at the VA on Long Island, St. Elizabeth in Dayton, and retired at age 70 from Bethany Lutheran Village. Interests were gems and minerals, Succulent Society, making and collecting dolls, vacation cruises, activities with grandchildren and a strong spiritual life through her Catholic faith.
