January 17, 1960 – May 5, 2018
Doug was born in Portland, Oregon on January 17, 1960 to Ardyce and James Barchek. He is survived by his wife Lynette; children Tyler (Victoria Hoover), Kyle (Kendra Lee), and Amy; parents James and Ardyce; sister Julie; and nephew Griffin. He is predeceased by his brother Greg. Doug spent his last five years of life heroically fighting pancreatic cancer. During this fight, he inspired everyone with his positivity and unwillingness to accept defeat. He lived his life fully and happily by fishing, playing tennis, spending time outdoors, playing his guitar, and camping with his family by his side. He even took on new hobbies, including archery, road rallies, rebuilding and riding his kart, racing his Mini Cooper, and building fishing rods. Doug spent his entire life moving from one great adventure to the next. During his childhood, he went camping, boating and fishing, rode motorcycles, went downhill and cross country skiing, and competed in gymnastics. After Doug and Lynette met in college, they spent most of their time competing in cycling races. They rode together, competing in one more race, the Horsey Hundred, up until his diagnosis in June 2013. Cycling was a passion of his, whether it was competitive road racing, mountain biking, or velodrome racing. This passion helped to shape his career with Raleigh in Seattle and then Huffy, which brought him and his family to Centerville in 1997. He shared this love of cycling, sports, and the outdoors with his three children, who continue to spread the joy of competition and adventures to this day. Celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 6:30 PM – 9 PM at Quail Run Racquet Club (4225 Brown Road Dayton, Ohio 45440). The open house will be casual dress. In lieu of flowers we ask that people donate to pancan.org. This organization is geared towards raising funds for research and helping raise awareness for pancreatic cancer.
