A lifelong resident and farmer with his family in Hartline, WA, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018. He was born to Joe and Ethel Harris Schrock, May 9,1937. Jim was married to Nellie Ellen Schrock for 60 years and they raised five children. Jim always worked until the job was done, usually 7 days a week - which means he never got done! Not afraid to take a break from hard farm work, he was also a lifelong power napper when the opportunity arose. Jim spent all twelve grades in the Hartline School system, even a stint in Boy Scouts, in Scoutmaster Bud Boger’s troop. In high school he was on the football team. He also religiously ran the time clock for home games of the Hartline Buckaroos boy’s basketball games starting while in High School, until the consolidation of the Hartline school with the Coulee City school. During the ‘70’s, having five kids, he took his turn on the school board. The seasons of the year brought the usual farm activities that came with livestock, grain and hay. A favorite recreation when the farm work slowed down in the winters used to be snowmobiling. In the ‘70’s he had a snowmobile accident that took almost a year to recover from! He also enjoyed, back in earlier days, a yearly elk hunting trip to the Blue Mountains with his brothers, father-in-law, Vernon Haase, plus relatives and buddies. Hunting the local wildlife was always a big part part of his life. Also, yearly, Jim, Nellie and son Jeff host a multiple week hunting camp set up at their Wilson Creek “Cow Camp” ranch during deer season. What had started as hunters from the other side of the state getting permission to hunt, has turned into longtime friendships with many fine meals, good times and considerable help on farm projects. Another annual highlight for almost 60 years was a family reunion at the farm of Herbert and Lois Pease. Jim worked on the farm regularly with Jeff until going into the hospital this summer. Jeff was working on his 50 year award with Dad! Back in the day when whoever made it to the Hartline fire station first - got to drive the firetruck - Jim was a member of the volunteer fire department…he helped on a lot of fires. For a long time the crews laughed that they had a record run of never saving a building. J im loved going to auctions! You never knew what he would come home with. One time it was a bunch of old orange Case-Harris combines that were used for years in the family wheat harvest. He and Mom have supported the efforts of their children when they could throughout their lives and provided a solid example of working hard for a good life.
Jim always wanted a “creek ranch”. Just a few years ago, he and Jeff finally purchased the Wilson Creek ranch they had already farmed and run cattle on for 30 plus years as tenants. He always admired hard working people and a good roof on a building. His personal pickup trucks and cars were always Fords, but he could drive anything on the farm. Jim was always a good one to ask and discuss about, how people were known to him and the family and how they were related to each other in the community. He almost always had a link and connection.
He was always up on the news for at least 50 miles around Hartline and always up for visiting to find out the latest. To help keep up on people and events, he read at least a dozen local papers, plus the bigger newspapers. A few years ago, Mom and Dad were honored to be the Grand Marshals for the Annual Hartline Days Parade. Dad and his sense of humor are already dearly missed and will be forever by friends and his family. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Ellen (Haase) Schrock, who went all thru school with him and then with him the rest of his life. He is also survived by brothers, Joseph and Willis (Carletta) and sisters Cathy Short (James) and Mary Ethel Schrock and brother-in-law, Vernon Haase (Sandy).
