Doris attended school in Grangeville, ID and Walla Walla WA; then moving to Reardan, WA for her senior year in high school where she met her future husband, Harold Wegner. They graduated from high school in 1945. The high school sweethearts were married on Saturday, April 5, 1947.
Doris and Harold lived on the century-old family wheat farm where they worked and raised their four children. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Spring Creek Grange, Washington State Quilters, and the Country Samplers Quilt Club.
Her passion was her family. Doris was a busy farm wife and a fabulous cook, quilter, seamstress, and world-class great mom. She and Harold attended stock shows, sporting contests, concerts, and any other event that involved their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They also loved to dance. Her home was always welcoming to friends and her entire family, especially her cherished grandkids. All of the grandkids have many great memories of spending time at the farm where Grandma and Grandpa taught them how to sew, cook, build things, and learn about nature. Of course, there were always cookies to eat and an abundance of tasty food on the table for all to eat and enjoy.
She and Harold had time for fun as well, traveling around the western U.S. in their motorhome, plus visiting Hawaii, Alaska, and Europe in their spare time. They lived on the family farm until finally retiring in 2010—moving to Spokane Valley’s Orchard Crest Retirement Center to be closer to kids and grandkids.
In 2017, Doris had a special event where she celebrated her 90th birthday on a sunny, warm July afternoon, with all of her children and grandchildren, along with over 100 extended family members in attendance.
Doris is survived by her four children: Gary (Anne), Nancy (Al), James, and Robert; along with her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Harold, her parents, and her seven brothers and three sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at the Reardan Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Reardan, WA at 11 a.m.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Orchard Crest and Horizon Hospice for their excellent and loving care of our mother. Any memorial contributions would be welcomed by Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Reardan, 155 W Cottonwood Ave, Reardan, WA 99029.
