Born on April 22, 1937, in Hansell, Iowa, he was the first-born son of Ralph and Lois (Schrock) Delp. He met Janice Marie Pearson in high school. After both had completed the academic requirements and competed in sports as Manly Railroaders, they graduated from Manly High School. Richard and Janice were married on July 16, 1957. Together, they were blessed with four children, thirteen grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
During high school, Richard was active in various sports and also found time for music, playing the tuba in the marching band and singing in the choir. After high school, he continued to enjoy bowling and pitching horseshoes while enthusiastically supporting his children in their own athletic, musical and theatrical pursuits.
Richard's professional journey began at the Manly Lumberyard and later the Mason City Brick and Tile. He eventually pursued a career in farm equipment sales with Massey Ferguson, Inc., serving as a store manager in various locations for over 25 years. Much of his time was spent in Greene, Iowa, where their children attended Greene Community Schools.
As they neared retirement, Richard and Janice returned to Manly to care for his parents. Sadly, Janice passed away in 2011, after a marriage of over 54 years. Richard is survived by his four children, Barry (Sherri) Delp of Davenport, Dennis Delp of Greene, Nancy (Kent)Delp-Peterman of Medford, WI, and Rachel (Bruce) Delp-Gerdes of Wall Lake, Iowa. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy (Kenneth) Davidson of Kansas and preceded in death by his sister Mary Patterson of Oklahoma. A great-grandson, Devan Delp, also preceded him in death.
Family graveside services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
