Visitation will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Weerts Funeral Home. Funeral service will be on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church in Princeton, Iowa. Memorials in Norman’s name may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church.
Norman was born on July 19, 1949 in Jefferson, IA to Norman P. and Katherina Sandberg. He attended Bettendorf schools and graduated from Bettendorf High School in 1968.
Starting at age 16, Norman worked in various positions at Eagles grocery store. He also attended Black Hawk College for two years while working for Eagles. In 1970, he started an ironworker’s apprenticeship and joined the Army Reserves, where he served for six years.
An ironworker by trade, Norm was very proud of his career in the construction industry. He was a member of Ironworkers Local 111 for over 50 years. His first job was working on the construction of the I-280 Bridge. In 1983, he and his longtime friend and business partner Steve Weindruch founded IMC Steel Erectors. IMC set the structural steel for many of the buildings and structures in the Quad City area. IMC was in business until 2010 when Norm and Steve sold the company to Treiber Construction. Norm retired after the sale of the company. He was passionate about his work, so construction and many of his projects worked their way into his conversations. Norm also was a trustee for the Ironworkers Pension Fund, where he worked to ensure that the ironworkers’ pension was well funded for many years to come. The various locations where the trustees’ training classes were held provided for some great travel opportunities for Norm and his wife, Carol.
As a hobby, Norm enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi River and surrounding areas. He also enjoyed fishing in the Florida Keys. He particularly liked fishing on the Marathon Lady tour boat, and he and Carol would take their catches back to their condo to cook. Even when he was just relaxing on the family boat moored in Princeton, Iowa or in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, there was always a fishing pole out. When asked why, he just responded with “You never know what you’re going to get.”
Boating was a passion for Norm and his family. He started out with a 16’ runabout, moved up to a 25’ cabin cruiser, and finally settled on a 32’ Carver yacht. He and his family enjoyed being on the water and navigating up and down the Mississippi River. He eventually moved the Carver to a marina in Wisconsin. He and his wife Carol would go there and spend days on the boat as somewhat of a vacation home. Norm and Carol enjoyed traveling. In their retirement years, Norm and Carol enjoyed wintering in the Florida Keys. They also visited Hawaii multiple times and took an Alaskan cruise.
Norm also enjoyed a good meal and made a hobby of trying different restaurants. He was always searching for the best prime rib. Norm and Carol also enjoyed cooking at home and trying new recipes.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 37 years, Carol; sons Luke (Jenny) of DeWitt and Joe of Princeton; and two grandchildren, Evan and Claire.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
