Joan M. Smith, 81, of St. Louis, MO; formerly of Davenport, IA passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. Cremation rites have been accorded and a funeral service will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Davenport on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. She will be inurned at Mt. Calvary Cemetery following the service. Lunch will follow at The Machine Shed, 7250 Northwest Boulevard in Davenport. Memorials in Joan’s name may be made to the MS Society at www.nationalmssociety.org.
Joan was born on February 27, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa to Lawrence and Daisy Barsetti. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Marycrest College in 1964, and taught special education in Davenport. She was united in marriage to Terry Keith Smith on June 17, 1967 in Des Moines, Iowa. Joan and Terry owned and operated Mr. Home Grown for many years with the help of their children. Many knew her from the store as the Caramel Apple Lady. Later in her career, she worked at MidAmerican Energy. She enjoyed her coworkers and time there immensely. She retired in 2014.
Joan spent her life in service to her family. She loved to cook and was known for her homemade cookies, candy, meatballs, and pizza. She also loved to spend time in her gardens. She had a positive outlook on life, and found humor in everyday experiences. She was an active member at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church until her health declined.
Those left to honor her memory are her children: Julie Colgan, Douglas Smith, David (Linsey) Smith, and Tony (Erika) Smith; grandchildren: Ryan Colgan, Bella Smith, Mae Smith, and Noah Smith; siblings Marilyn Agey, Judy Swartzbaugh, Mary Jo (Dave) Barsetti-Nerland, Robert (Kathy) Barsetti, Joseph (Rita) Barsetti, and David (Joy) Barsetti; sisters-in-law Suzanna and Mari Lynn Barsetti; and brother in law George Malsam.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Terry; her parents; brothers Larry Barsetti and Richard Barsetti; her sister Carolyn Malsam, and her son-in-law Peter Colgan.
