Chuck was born on December 18, 1952, in Davenport, to Charles and Arline (Burmeister) Kai. He was a 1971 graduate of Davenport West High School and a graduate of the University of Iowa.
Chuck was employed at Bituminous Insurance in Rock Island, Illinois, where he worked as a Risk Control Consultant for nearly three decades before retiring in 2015.
Chuck’s quick wit, smile, and easy-going nature made him the life of the party at get-togethers and was the reason so many people were quick to call Chuck their friend. No matter the audience, Chuck enjoyed a good conversation. He had an inquisitive mind and always wanted to learn from others’ experiences. And given his easy-going nature, other people were quick to share with Chuck.
In his spare time, Chuck enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, working on crossword puzzles, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears. Always one to emphasize the “great” in “great uncle,” Chuck took pride in watching his eight grandnieces and grandnephews grow up, and he took a special interest in their activities and successes. As an avid outdoorsman, Chuck enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and spending time at his cabin along the Cedar River. He was a lover of all dogs, with a particular fondness for yellow labs, and he owned several that served as his faithful companions throughout his life.
Chuck is survived by his niece, Michelle (Jeremy) Collins; nephew, Scott (Angela) Loftus; nephew, Chris (Britta) Loftus; grandnephews Trevor Collins, Evan Collins, Tyler Loftus, and Hayden Loftus; grandnieces Kaitlyn Collins, Claire Loftus, Zoey Loftus, and Joslyn Loftus; his brother-in-law, Stephen Loftus; and his lifelong friend Reggie Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Arline Kai, and his sister, Cheryl (Kai) Loftus.
