MACKINNON, Theresa Marie (nee MacDonald, Burke) - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother and grandmother Theresa Marie MacKinnon at the DGH on November 11, 2022 at the age of 76 after a short battle with cancer. Theresa was born to Michael (Red Mick) and Peggy (Margaret Gauthier) MacDonald in Sydney, NS.
Theresa is survived by her two daughters Karen (Brad) Neville, Dartmouth, NS and Barbara (Stephen) Chase, Dartmouth, NS along with three step daughters Karen (Greg) Ibbott, Vancouver, BC, Cheryl (Dean) Tataryn, Ottawa, Ont. and Kelly (Jason) Robson Dartmouth, NS. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Andrew, Chelsea, Shannon, Braden and Ashlyn Neville; Alexander (Leigh) and Kendall McLean; Amanda and Patrick Chase, Peter and Michael Ibbott; Jensen Tataryn; and Alexander and Zachary Robson. Theresa is also survived by her sisters Patricia (Lloyd) Larkin, North Rustico, PEI, Frances (Maurice) DeBoer, Cayuga, Ont. and Robert (Linda) MacDonald, St. Catherine’s, Ont. Theresa was predeceased by her first husband, George C. Burke in 1979 and by her second husband, Peter “Duke” MacKinnon in 2020. She was also predeceased by her parents, her sisters Catherine Dicks and Carol (Blaise) MacIsaac and her brothers Michael “Mikey” MacDonald, Kenny MacDonald and Harold “Bunker” MacDonald, former son-in-law Daniel McLean and her infant granddaughter, Samantha McLean in 1990. She will be missed by her in-laws Blaise MacIsaac, Burlington, Ont.; George’s sisters Janet (Rick) Ryan, Sydney, NS, Glenda (Thomas) Wainwright, Ottawa, Ont. and Elaine Gabriel, Dartmouth, NS and Michael (Beryl) MacLean, Sydney, NS; Peter’s family Sylvia MacKinnon, Largo, Florida and Dartmouth, NS and Jim (Marie) MacKinnon, Penticton, BC and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Mom also had several lifelong friends including Elizabeth Ranni, Gloria Doncaster and Pam Mahalik. She will also be missed by many of her and Peter’s dear friends that they made over the years on their many adventures.
Mom made the best scones and loved to do her crossword puzzles and we will miss her humor, banana bread and delicious ribs. Mom was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, wife and sister who always listened, never passed judgement and never gave unsolicited advice. She was a true gem and will be missed for all the days of our lives. Cremation has taken place and
A joint celebration of the Life of mom and Peter (dad) will be planned for next summer. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Theresa MacKinnon. Special thanks to Patti Macdougall, Palliative Care at the DGH and the staff of 5 East, especially nurses Joanna, Hannah, Erin, Sarah, Candi, Maddie and Mary Lynn who treated mom with much respect.
