The family of Stephen Alexander McIntosh is saddened to announce his passing on September 29, 2017. He died peacefully in the Dartmouth General Hospital in the arms of his loving wife and daughter and surrounded by his family. Stephen was born in Greenwood, Nova Scotia, on September 19, 1955, son of James and Joan (Baker) McIntosh. He was raised in a military family and lived on a variety of bases during his youth. As a young man Steve moved to Dartmouth where he met his future wife, Patti (Currie). They were married in 1980 and five years later were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Marie. Steve graduated from Dartmouth Vocational School as a carpenter in 1983. He was employed by the Technical University of Nova Scotia/Dalhousie University from 1984 until his retirement in 2011. Stephen enjoyed his trade and made many lasting friendships during his years on the TUNS Campus. In his youth Steve was a competitive swimmer and represented PEI at the 1973 Canada Games in New Westminster, BC. His lifelong passion was rowing and he was a member of Mic Mac Rowing Club and North Star Rowing Club. He was introduced to the sport when he was 18 years old and participated until his illness prevented him from doing so. Over the years many members of the rowing community became close friends and Steve enjoyed spending time with them both on and off the water. In the summer of 2016, Mic Mac Rowing Club honoured Steve by dedicating a boat in his name acknowledging his efforts in the development of the Club. Following his retirement in 2011, He took up three new hobbies with great enthusiasm. The first was playing the guitar, tutored patiently by friend Donnie Ferris, the second was playing pickleball, and the third hobby, which consumed the majority of his spare time, was rebuilding vintage motorcycles with his close friend, Roger O'Neill. They spent many enjoyable, and sometimes frustrating, hours working in Roger's garage rebuilding two beautiful vintage motorcycles that Steve was very proud to own. They often reviewed their ongoing progress and problems with the Tuesday/Thursday motorcycle coffee group. Steve was fortunate to have a large loving family and McIntosh gatherings always included telling stories about growing up in a household of six siblings and the trouble they got into and the fun that they had. Lots of laughs were shared as they recalled their various shenanigans. Steve especially enjoyed travelling to car shows and other events with his brother-in-law, Rendell Hefler. They were the best of friends and shared many great times, including wonderful trips with Patti and her sister Jane. Steve is survived by his wife of 36 years, Patricia (Currie), daughter Marie (Gavin Deveau), parents James and Joan (Baker), brothers Robert (Michelle), Andy (Wendy), Doug (Nancy Gray), Stuart (Diane), sister Elizabeth Jones (Bruce) and in total eleven "McIntosh" nieces and nephews who have fond memories of happy times with their Uncle Steve. He is also survived by Patti's family who loved him dearly, sister-in-law Jane Hefler and her husband Rendell, brother-in-law Michael Currie and his two daughters Stephanie and Catherine Currie (Colin Wiseman). Stephen was predeceased by his parents-in-law, Ryland and Helen Currie. Steve was blessed to have had many wonderful friends and family who stood by him and Patti through the wonderful times and the hard times. Special friends whom he considered family are Dennis and Trish Maynard, Roger and Florence O'Neill, and Heather Cameron. Steve was thrilled to see Marie and Gavin be married on November 26, 2016. It gave him great joy to walk Marie down the aisle to a man who will love and cherish her forever. From the beginning of Stephen's diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2013, he received the utmost care from every medical professional he encountered. He and Patti were overwhelmed by the dedication and kindness that they experienced on every level. Special thanks go to Dr. David Bell (Oncologist/Surgeon), Dr. Lori Wood (Medical Oncologist), Nurses Marsha and Pat, the Palliative Care Team at Cobequid, especially Patti and Marlese. Heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital where Stephen received the utmost care and kindness. Cremation has taken place and arrangements are under the direction of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 3rd at 4-8pm in A. L.
