DOMINEY, Rodney Gordon “Rod” – 80, of Dartmouth, The family wishes to announce Rod’s passing in the early morning hours of Saturday June 3 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Burgeo Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Charles and Varina (Guy) Dominey. He was keenly interested in sports throughout his entire life, having played football, hockey and golf from a young age. He carried this love of sports into his career in the Royal Canadian Air Force, working as a Physical Education Recruitment Instructor. In this capacity, he was stationed in many areas throughout the country. Following retirement from the military, he pursued a civilian career as Equipment Manager at the gymnasium at HMCS Stadacona in Halifax, retiring at age 65 in 2001. He and his wife Marcella established many close friendships throughout their travels, and have maintained these in the years since. Surviving are his wife of 58 years Marcella (Crane), sons Gary (Nancy Hakeman) of Golden, B.C., Rodney (Adele MacDonald), Halifax, daughter Jillian (Jim Joyce) of Dartmouth, grandchildren Kristin Dominey (Barry BJ Banks) of Halifax, Matthew Dominey (Jenna) of Summerside) , Ryan Joyce of Dartmouth, Jordan Hakeman of Calgary, Krista Hakeman of Golden, five great grandchildren, and former daughter in law Karen Dominey of Summerside. Also surviving is brother Ernie (late Betty) of Edmonton and sister Shirley Conrad (late Gordon) of Dartmouth, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff at 3 West of the Dartmouth General Hospital for keeping Rod comfortable in his final days. Cremation has taken place under the direction of A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home in Dartmouth. As per Rod’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
