To be a friend of Ken’s meant to be invited into his home and share food and drink, conversation, stories and laughs. This is how Ken loved his friends. He brought his friends together and showered them with love through being together. And, oh, did he love hosting his friends and family. He was never more in his element than when he was hosting a party in his home and serving his loved ones.
From the epic adult coasting parties in the winter in the 80s, the large barbeques during sailing regattas when the boys were young, the big family gatherings with extended family and to their summer garden parties celebrating their wedding anniversary each year or hosting 30 or more of their closest friends for a Christmas feast, Ken and Chris both loved their friends and family through spoiling us with good food, drink and being together.
Ken also loved to travel, and always met new friends while visiting new places. It was not unusual for him to meet other Nova Scotians while on trips abroad that he and Chris would continue friendships with upon returning home.
Shortly after he and Chris were married, they travelled to Europe and connected with cousins from overseas and this created a lifelong connection to England and their family there. It was in this time that Ken began his 30 year career with Imperial Oil as a power engineer.
He also loved sharing stories from the family’s history and the local communities of Eastern Shore and contributed artifacts, pictures and stories to both the Eastern Shore Archives and the Memory Lane Heritage Village.
But it is the love of his family, of his beloved wife of almost 55 years, (together since they were 16 years old for nearly 65 years), his cherished sons, Colin and Aaron, daughter-in-law Zoe, and his two hearts, grandchildren Emma Rhys and Alexander Bryndon, that his purpose for being really shone. He was a natural father and grandfather with infinite patience, and ever-loving kindness and active involvement. He encouraged and supported his sons and grandchildren to follow their hearts and passions and was always available for them, both physically and with his whole heart.
Ken is predeceased by his parents Douglas and Florence Mitchell, and his brother Garth. He is survived by his sister, Una.
It is in his roles, as husband, father, and Papa that we will most remember and most miss Ken. He loved us a lot, and for that we are grateful.
Cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at a later date.
