It is with deep and heartfelt sadness that we tell you of the peaceful passing of Greg, surrounded by his loving family, on Friday November 30, 2012. Born on May 24, 1950, in Dartmouth, he was the eldest son of the Victor and Margaret (Wickwire) King.Greg graduated from Dartmouth High School, then Dalhousie University with a Masters in Education Administration. His life as a father, husband, and teacher soon followed. Giving his family the best that they could ever hope for in life experiences, vacations, and in having a happy home to live in. Making sure immediate family and extended family were always close, was the most important thing to him and always saying to them at night, “Dad loves you”. Besides his family, teaching was his love. Over 35 years, and thousands of students, the majority of those years were at Prince Andrew High School. Countless students, his “Sweathogs”, would tell stories of an animated Mr. King engaging them in the subjects of History, Civics, Geography, or Law. Perhaps the most memorable story was him acting out, and drawing a parallel between the Twisted Sister song, “We’re Not Gonna Take It” to the American Revolution. It was a sad day when he retired. Greg had many hobbies and accomplishments, notably, he was involved with Masons at Virgin Lodge #3, ran numerous small businesses, was an advocate of promoting the history of the Halifax Explosion, community policing projects with Halifax Regional Police, and participated in charitable work for Saint Mary’s University. He also enjoyed playing guitar and singing, traveling, painting, skiing, and documenting family history. With all of these and other interests, Greg found the most joy in life simply working on the cottage, relaxing with family and friends, beach bum time, antiquing, barbequing, and having the weekend bonfires. He would often jokingly refer to his family as the Griswold’s for all the antics that would take place on family vacations and Christmas; he was the ultimate family man. Greg is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Donna-Lynne (Dunphy), children Frank (Nadine), Phil (Lisa), Victor (Kelly), and Tanya-Louise (Eddie), mother Margaret, brother Randy (Roberta), grandsons Angus and Benjamin, and granddaughters Emma and Megan. Greg was predeceased by his father Victor and granddaughter Cassia. For more than a decade, Greg has battled a rare and debilitating muscle disease, but did not stop him from greeting his children, grandchildren, and many friends and family members with a twinkling eye and a smile. He always had some life experience to share with those seeking advice, and loved to debate municipal planning and political issues. He gave his all to causes that he believed in. He celebrated life and made sure to create memorable moments for his children and grandchildren, from grading day presents and outings, trips to Disney, and to see hockey games and favourite players. Christmas was by far the time of year that he loved the most, with the house all decked out, the giant stuffed reindeer, “The Yes Deer”, towering out of the bathtub, the presents wrapped two months early and piled high, and of course the traditional family gatherings where his love of family shone through. A visitation will be held Tuesday December 4, from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at Mattatall’s on Portland St. Dartmouth. Funeral will be held at Christ Church, Ochertlony St. Dartmouth on Wednesday, December 5 at 2pm. Family flowers only please, donations can be made to SRCF Learning Centre for Halifax Inc. c/o Harold Crosby or to Breakfast for Kids, c/o Doug Melville through Grand Lodge (Masons).
