Weir, Donald Andrew, BSc (Dal), BEd (Acadia), MDCM (Dal)-86 passed away Friday November 1, 2013 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, USA he was a son of the late Dr. Andrew F. Weir and Bessie M. (Eaton). He attended school in Freeport, Digby Co., Dalhousie University, where he received his Bachelor of Science, and Acadia University where he received his Bachelor of Education. He taught school at Morristown, Kings Co., and Brookfield Rural High in Colchester Co. In 1956 Don received his degree in Medicine from Dalhousie University and moved to Dartmouth where he practiced in family medicine at the Dartmouth Medical Centre for 23 years. He was then on staff at the Nova Scotia Hospital, Dartmouth as Director of Admissions and Chief of Medicine, retiring in 1991. During his career he had been active in the Canadian College of Family Physicians and was on the examination board for a number of years. He received his certification and fellowship as a member of the college. He was active in the Dartmouth Medical Society and was on the executive and president of the Society. As a family physician he was active on the provincial section and was secretary-treasurer for a number of years. He enjoyed being in the Dalhousie Medical Preceptorship program assisting in the instruction of medical students. He was on the board and then acted as president of the Dalhousie Medical Alumni Association for three years. Early in the organization of the Dartmouth Community Concerts Association he was on the board and also president for three years. He was a member of Grace United Church choir and on the Unified board of the church, acting as chairman for one year. He previously had been a member of the Dartmouth Choral Society, Bel Canto Choir, Dartmouth Civic Band and Dalhousie Medical Tupper Band, the Royal Commonwealth Association and Brightwood Golf Club. He was also a former member of the Dartmouth Curling Club, Waegwoltic Club and the Dartmouth Kinsmen Club.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey (Powell); children, Brenda (David Fraser), Cynthia (Frank Hoskins), and George (Lela Milosevich); grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Doane, Leslie, Jonathan and Ben Hoskins, Julia, Stefanie and Jessica Weir; great grandchildren, Hailey, Nathaniel, Mikayla, Ronin, William and Kaelyn; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Dr. Edward Weir, Margaret MacDonald, Jean Franklin and Dr. Andrew Weir.
Cremation has taken place under the care of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday November 6 at 11am from Grace United Church, Rev. Stephen Fram officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Hospital Memorial Fund, the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation, Grace United Church, or Dalhousie Medical School.
