It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Charles Pius Otto on September 25th, 2018 at age 90, surrounded by his loving family. Charlie was a lifetime resident of Dartmouth, born “in the front bedroom of 51 Dahlia St” on October 26th, 1927, son of the late Ernest and Muriel (Leedham) Otto. He worked from an early age in the family business of Otto's Ice Company. He then joined the Merchant Navy and upon his return worked as an electrician at Fairey Aviation. He later enjoyed a successful career in the car dealership industry. Upon his retirement, he was a considerate and well-liked taxi driver. He was a member of the Austenville Owl’s Club and of Eastern Star Lodge, of which his grandfather, Pius Otto, was Grand Master. Charlie will fondly & lovingly be remembered by family & friends as a jokester, an avid cribbage player, for his generous nature and his compassion for all of the family’s many dogs. He looked forward to traditional gatherings of friends over their morning coffee at Mic Mac Mall. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 67 years, Marie (Beach) Otto; daughters Heather (Jack) Kelly, Deborah Otto and son Brian Otto. Grandchildren, Dayna (Phenrick) Marshall; Sean (Gabriela) Hatchette and step-granddaughter Katie (Daniel) Sangster. Great grandsons Noah and Owen Marshall; nephew Robert Akerley, all of Dartmouth; niece Valerie (Michael) Rosen, Alberta. Predeceased by brother Ernest “Junior" Otto and sister Katherine Akerley. The family wishes to express much appreciation to Dr. Dan Reid and Dr. Frank MacDonald; SDM Pharmacy staff, Mic Mac Mall; Community Care; Caregiver, Tyler Dort; DVA; VON; Palliative Care. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, October 2nd at Christ Church, 61 Dundas St, Dartmouth with Rev. Kyle Wagner officiating.
