David J. Babcock, age 59, of New Bedford died August 12, 2010 accidentally. He was the husband of the late Barbara Jean (Filo) Babcock and the loving companion of Peggy Sue Carvalho.Born in Boston, a son of Priscilla L. (Jenne) Babcock of Carver, and the late William Babcock he moved to New Bedford in 2002.
He was a graduate of Brighton High School, Class of 1970 and attended Northeastern University. A project manager, technical expert, team leader and Senior Computer Specialist, he worked as a private computer consultant, at a variety of companies throughout the area including Raytheon, Telex , and Memorex from 1979-1993 retiring from the US Boston Regional Census Center in 2003.
For the past five years he was a Scout Master for Troop 170 in South Dartmouth, received both District and Scoutmaster Awards of Merit. He was a member of the order of the Arrow of Brotherhood and was Cachelot Scout Master of the Year 2009-2010 receiving the Silver Harpoon - the highest award available in its district. In 2007 he organized the Boy Scout Jamboree for 250 Scouts at Fort Tabor.
Active in the community, he volunteered for SMILES Mentoring Program, the HOPE Collaborative and New Bedford ACTS, the Coalition for Buzzards Bay, the SeaLab Marine Science Education Center, and the New Bedford Global Learning Charter School.
Surviving in addition to his companion and mother: son Evan James Babcock, daughter Courtney Jean Babcock both of New Bedford, step-daughter Jennifer Gaudet and husband Sean and their twin children Thomas J. and Kelly J. Gaudet all of Boston, sister Diane L. Sullivan and husband Edward of E. Falmouth, Carol Frey and husband Joseph of Wareham, brothers William Babcock and wife Diane of Hood River, OR , and Robert Babcock and wife Suzanne of Carver, and Peggy Sue’s children John L. Carvalho Jr. and wife Brandy and Ross K. Carvalho all of Fernandina Beach, FL and many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd. Dartmouth MONDAY AUG 16, 2010 from 3-6 PM followed by a Service at 6 PM in the Funeral Home.
