Thomas S. Carter, Jr., of Lindale, Texas, peacefully passed in his sleep Tuesday, March 12, 2019, in Dallas, Texas. Tom was born in Dallas on June 6, 1921, to Thomas Sr. and Matilda Carter. He served in the Army Corp of Engineers during WWII in the South Pacific. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1944 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked his way up in the railroad industry, ultimately becoming Chairman, President and CEO of the Kansas City Southern Railroad. He retired in 1990 and served as a director for 5 more years. After retirement, he went back to school and obtained a master's degree in Engineering Management from University of Kansas. He taught college for several years at Johnson County Community College in Kansas. He loved staying active and enjoyed eating out at restaurants and traveling the world. He enjoyed treating his family to an annual Thanksgiving trip, visiting places such as, Bermuda, Disneyland, Disney World, Hawaii and many other exciting places, including his favorite place, New York City. Tom is preceded in death by his loving wife Janet Hostetter Carter, daughter Susan Carter Estes, parents Thomas Sr. And Matilda Carter. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Diane and John Petersen of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, son and daughter-in-law Charles and Stephanie Carter of La Quinta, California, and daughter and son-in-law Carol and Thomas Koehler of Lindale, Texas; five grandchildren, John Carter Petersen, Carlyn Wice, Cameron Carter, Carter Koehler and Christian Koehler; great-granddaughter Olivia Janet Wice; sister Martha Law and numerous nieces and nephews. Services are scheduled for 3pm, Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Sparkman/Hillcrest in Dallas, with Ken Warren officiating.
